Complaints Dept: The (usual) People vs. Ezra Levant

With the latest legal action against Ezra Levant adjourned until next month–Khurrum Awan’s $100,000 libel suit– perhaps the Sun Media rodeo clown can spare a moment for his burgeoning file with the Law Society of Alberta.

The LSA is a popular stop for complainants as they register their sundry Ezra-related apoplexies with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, Human Rights Commission or relevant court of law, only to be struck by a shocking revelation: “That fuckwad’s a lawyer?”

Indeed he is, and the LSA’s current Member’s Statement on Member 11761, Ezra Isaac Levant, notes that he is currently entitled to practice law in the province, insured and under no current restrictions.

Much of the proven lawyer’s rap sheet is taken up with nine “current citations,” most based on complaints by an assortment of Ezra antagonists/litigants, including Internet Nazi-hunter Richard Warman, U of O professor Amir Attaran and oilsands-boycotting Chiquita Bananas VP Manuel Rodriguez, to whom Ezra directed a witty “Chinga tu madre” (Go fuck your mother!) on his show in 2011.

In others, the Law Society itself appears to be accusing him of being economical with the vérité. Those yellow cards in full:

1. It is alleged that in your publications outside the practice of law complained of by Richard Warman in 2010 you conducted yourself in such a way as to bring disrespect to the justice system, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

2. It is alleged that in your publications outside the practice of law complained of by Richard Warman in 2010 you failed to maintain a civil level of discourse, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

3. It is alleged in your publications outside of the practice of law complained of by Richard Warman in 2010 you personally harassed Richard Warman and L.R., and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

4. It is alleged that you breached undertakings given to the Law Society regarding the publication of your opinions, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

5. It is alleged that you were unfair and discourteous in your conduct towards Amir Attaran and M.R., and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

6. It is alleged that you failed to be accurate and candid in remarks made on your television show in segments concerning Amir Attaran and M.R. and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

7. It is alleged that you failed to be accurate and candid in your responses to the Law Society in a matter of a complaint by Amir Attaran, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

8. It is alleged that you disclosed information regarding a complaint against you by Amir Attaran in breach of your obligation to keep such information confidential, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

9. It is alleged that you misled the law Society in your response to a complaint by A.F. and in a Membership Information Update Form, and that such conduct is conduct deserving of sanction.

Sanction, schmanction. No history of any disciplinary action is noted by the ALS, but, curiously, Ezra has two restrictive undertakings on file, the most recent for a three-month stretch in 2009, promising that he “will not receive or hold trust money or operate a client’s trust account in Alberta.”

Whatever could it all mean?

Warmann is nothing more than a pain in the arse. WW2 ended almost 70 years ago – surely it’s time to move on!

“Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.” Actually, if you check your facts, Warman is combating neo-nazi kooks, you know “neo” meaning “new”, you know those dickhead hatemongers active today, not those dead ones from WWW 2.

SkyBlue – yes, lets all forget about it and “move on” to the next atrocity.
