There’s no consensus among Canada geese

How Ian McDowell encountered our quintessential political animals

Our house backs onto a river near Ottawa, and one recent morning, after a night of howling, tree-bending winds, my wife and I surveyed a forlorn group of Canada geese, huddled on a remaining jut of ice at the river’s edge. They looked so cold and miserable that we wondered why they had come north so early.
