Tits Up at Toastmedia: Petfinder picket party?!

A friendly heads-up/ultimatum Ottawa Petfinder drudges from HR suprema Linda Ruhl, as a July 28 strike/lockout date looms.

The moribund daily’s surviving hacks have been without a collective agreement since November 2015, during which time layoffs, buyouts and an unholy pounding of benefits have ensued.

Readers may recall, par exemple, International Women’s Day 2017, which Postmedia celebrated by eliminating maternity leave top-up payments, just one of many economies scraped off hacks’ benefits packages.

“Across Postmedia we currently have numerous and varied benefit programs, pension plans and other human resources policies like vacation that apply to various employee groups. In order to both achieve harmony across our operations and to ensure the affordability of these programs going forward, we are making changes that will apply to everyone,” quoth head office.

And the harmony was deafening, from the defined benefit pension plans (adieu!) to the vacation regime, previously five weeks after 11 years’ service, bumped up to six weeks after 21 at the Petfinder, harmonized to five weeks after 15 years chain wide and, er, that’s it.

Also toast, retiree benefits and the Employee Assistance Plan, a free and confidential counselling service for employees for a wide range of personal, financial, mental health and addiction issues, bad timing for the inmates of the Petfinder/Sun, as they absorbed the latest beatings from HR.
