Now that Duffy has been acquitted, when does the Harper-Wright trial start? In the meantime, the grisly duo had better watch their backs because the ol’ Duff is coming for them.
The Prince song “When Doves Cry” was #1 in the U.S. for five weeks, from July 7, 1984 to August 4, 1984, keeping Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”, from reaching the top spot.
“When Doves Cry” was voted as the best single of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics’ poll. Billboard ranked it as the #1 single of 1984. Spin magazine ranked the song 6th greatest single of all time.
Prince [Prince Rogers Nelson] wrote and composed “When Doves Cry” after all the other tracks were complete on Purple Rain. In addition to vocals, he played all instruments on the track.
But we wonder if Michael Dennis Duffy will be remembered fondly or as long. In 1984 he was working for CTV, and wnning an award for coverage the the Armenian takeover of the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa. Eh.
And while the music video (directed by Prince himself), released on MTV in June 1984 opened with white doves emerging from double doors to reveal Prince in a bathtub, what would Duffy’s video be like?
Dave, re your last question, I suspect that Duffy’s video would involve a jacuzzi-sized tub of whatever DQ Blizzard Duff finds tasty. As for the birds, I’m guessing … vultures … amply supplied with copies of the home addresses of S. Harper and N. Wright.
BTW, did you know that the late, but immortal, Karen Carpenter not only sang lead vocals for The Carpenters, she also sang back-up vocals AND played the drums? No mean drummer his own self, Buddy Rich, once praised her work highly (and unfacetiously).
